tangible belief

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

i heard about a great idea for the music industry this morning…

log on to the site, download 3 songs for free per band, pay $10 to the band you like and back your belief, once the “belief” reaches $50000, the band uses the money to record an album, and the profits are split 3 ways;

-the band,
-the believers,
-the website that brought them together.

cool huh.

especially since i read the article in wired about that big record exec… the way he contradicted himself, blamed the consumer (his customer) and was still so aggressive about increasing profits, so annoying…

…part 2

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

…ended up falling asleep on the couch on sunday (do you blame me?), not only was i worn out but lost404 was a “kate” episode, BORING… i wish they would just explain how the “oceanic 6″ got off the island and get back to telling the main story line; the present. i’m sick of seeing what is essentially the past, being eeked out, damn.

if i ever want answers i’m addicted to the wrong tv show, huh.

oh yeah, newcastle had another 5 goals put past them on the weekend, terrific. form from the last 5 matches?

2 goals for,
16 goals against,

granted our last 5 opponents were:

arsenal (cup),
arsenal,
‘brough,
‘villa,
man u.

but c’mon! 1 premier league point from a possible 12… it’s not looking good at all. i wish big sam was still around. there, i said it.

good to see another season of bike racing has started again, i haven’t finished watching race 1 yet, so don’t stress about the spoilers… hmm, that said i did see nori have a massive slide and high side after giving max biaggi the finger, classic stuff! (i’ll try to find a youtube vid of it).

flip!

Monday, February 25th, 2008

wow, so unbeknownst be me, liam has been rolling himself over for “a while now”…

i put him down the other night and he promptly rolled over!… i yelled out to kim, and got a “yeah, so” response… hmm… so now, he’ll play on the rug in the living room rolling back and forth… amazing!

the weekend just gone was great in parts, (not bad in others)… we watched stardust friday night; funny, warm, smart, an excellent film… saturday we met marc and helena, and went for brekky in fitzroy, we got a table in the corner with a bench seat so liam sat between us for a while and then sat on my lap while we ate… at one stage, quick as anything, he reached out and grabbed the double smoked bacon right off my plate! luckily kim grabbed it before he was able to shove it in his mouth but wow, what a little champ! shortly after he fell asleep in kims arms and we were able to have another coffee and just chat and relax…

after me feeling bad for not returning a missed call all week, it turned out schalk was still in town, so we met up, and hung out for the rest of the day… nice! …and later watched blood diamond… what an amazing film, the thing is, it may as well be a true story, uhh, challenging, harrowing in parts, and overall well worth watching…

then… pulled an all-nighter at work, but at least i wasn’t alone, and everything went really smoothly, so yeah, not great, but happily uneventful, phew!

so after climbing into bed to see the clock tick 0430, woke at 0506 to hear some (drunk) guy from my building, outside my window yelling into his mobile, trying to explain to his girlfriend that the ATM ate his card, and the cabbie waiting out the front was going call the police because he couldn’t pay… that went on for about half an hour and i guess the taxi drove off and left him alone out of sheer boredom.

it wasn’t bad, afterwards i got a solid 3 hours sleep, showered, then watched go with kim and liam… it’s still pretty funny after all this time, i wanted to see it again, after seeing jumper in gold class the other night, apparently the same guy directed both… hmm, thinking about it, there isn’t really a comparison, “go” is far away a much better film.

ok ok, i have to wrap this up, sunday arv was poker at a mates place, and i finally won another game! it’s been SO long… so $80 richer… very happy with that.

(to be continued)…

bit late…

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

yeah, i know I’m arriving a bit late but I just have a couple of things to say about microsoft taking over yahoo…

i was thinking, what does yahoo do other than being a search portal?  After some hunting around, found this… but in that list what is actually worth anything?

·         I use and love del.icio.us,
·         I have an account on flickr that I don’t use
·         I thought Geocities died?
·         Yahoo webmail is much more popular in the states…
·         Yahoo7; the tv station… won’t ninemsn cause a conflict of interest?

Once the deal is done I doubt Microsoft will even bother rebranding them and maybe just decide to dictate their direction…

speaking of flickr, I saw that someone had a cry that a stock company was stealing their uploaded images and selling them… why someone who didn’t want their photography stolen would have non-watermarked images bigger than 4 megapixels available for public viewing smacks of some serious naivety… of course they’ve all been changed now, maybe she learnt something?

if you have a look at section 9, it’s not like yahoo promise not to anyway… so what are flickr users so angry about?

learning to balance…

plus some new photos…

is it safe to look yet?

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

so i think i’ve finally settled on a new theme… boy that was a hectic few days, i thought i really liked that cutline one, but there was too much customisation needed, and after two full days of trying to get by on my limited knowledge of CSS and sketchy artistic direction; found another theme and started again…

hmm, so what have i learnt?

before you start doing drastic changes, i’d recommend taking some notes down of why you want to change, and what you don’t like about the current design…

for me, the old theme was too narrow and there wasn’t enough white space, i couldn’t decide what i wanted higher in the sidebar (i still can’t work that out, but at least now i have options), and frankly, i was tired of the colour scheme…

changes to the new theme from standard?

  • it came optimised for lots of advertising, so i’ve had to take all that out,
  • added my own photos for the header,
  • changed all the sidebar content,
  • changed all the footer content,
  • taken out a lot of fluff from the “single post” code and changed it to look very similar to the old single post theme,
  • and more…

left to do?

  • move the left sidebars right margin, left a little.
  • reverse the order that the comments appear.
  • add more photo headers.
  • investigate the feed truncating.

…and of course write posts that are more interesting.

new theme…

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

yes, i changed the theme, thanks to rob for offering feedback while it was all very broken and new… i will continue to change things until it looks ok to me… firstly i’ll make the sidebar font a lot smaller and probably move them both to the right side, it is far too busy at the moment… also the font isn’t what i expected; i didn’t even realise people even used times new roman anymore! damn.

the tinkering will continue, stay tuned.

spam you want!

Monday, February 11th, 2008

i’ve finally got the email notification going for this blog… the link to subscribe lives at the top right corner under the counter, cool huh…

it’ll be handy for people who don’t spend all their waking life on the web (unlike myself it would seem); so instead of remembering to check back here every so often, you’ll just get an email when the site is updated, easy.

also, i notice nobody has contacted me about twitter… that’s ok, i can hack it…

just think, an advanage of it might be if you can’t be bothered writing full blog posts (rob, carmen, paul, dave, etc), you could force the twitter feed out to your blog and voilà! easy fresh content at the click of a T9 keypad…

just sayin.

vs qatar

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

last wednesday australia played the first of it’s world cup 2010 qualification matches… you may have been waiting for me to post a picture of how i would’ve like to have seen them run on but i didn’t get around to it nevertheless joel pre-empted… and i ended up emailing around to a few people what i thought, and after watching the match (a day late), and seeing the wrap up this afternoon; my predicted lineup was mostly correct!

diamond midfield with cahill at the point and culina protecting the defenders…

my thoughts on the match? obviously the first half was excellent, i don’t think carney will ever be displaced from the team, he was the standout… interestingly, i re-read my aus vs arg post, carney stoodout then too… ok who else… i’m not sure bresciano should be a certain starter anymore, he didn’t ever seem to create much or take on his players… he scored, great, and it seemed to be the only goal they meant to score but otherwise, maybe we should start looking for a quicker and more creative centre midfielder to get us to 2010?

data is your friend

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

so for me, i guess the jury is still out on twitter, what to use it for, what’s the point? and all that… but stats are always interesting aren’t they! aren’t they?  i came across a guy and site that agrees with me, tweetstats.com

check my tweets by month:

looks like i got pretty keen about 3rd quarter last year huh…

maybe i would use it more if i knew it didn’t hook straight into my facebook status, but then, sometimes that’s a good thing and i probably would use it more if more people i knew used it, lots of strangers tend to come across like noise, and at one stage i remember actually shouting at my screen “shut up, shut up, i don’t care“…but now that i’ve pared my following list down to only people i’m interested hearing from i haven’t had any more of those turns, i guess it’s like molly says (more or less), “a jerk is a jerk on any level; real life, internet forum, twitter, digg, etc”

…that said, if we know each other, join twitter and let me know, i promise to follow you!

:D

first swim!

Monday, February 4th, 2008

as above, we took liam to a local pool for his first swimming lesson and he had a great time… with all the excitement he lasted about twenty five minutes through a thirty minute lesson, so that’s not bad for his first time…

on friday night, me and some of my work mates went to the australia vs india twenty20 match at the mcg… it was a bit crap really, 75 runs, the stadium booing singh, the crush at richmond station afterwards… oh well, being at the G when it’s sold out is still a really amazing thing… i often wonder what the san siro must be like, given they fit 85 thousand people around a square pitch rather than an oval, like the g…

brand new - the palace

Friday, February 1st, 2008

so, the brand new concert last night… um, firstly i ended up selling the 2nd ticket i had to someone who replied to a gumtree ad had submitted earlier in the week, so that was cool, i didn’t end up wasting too much money, and she even turned out to be pretty cool… the palace was selling two types of beer; corona at $9 or VB in a can at $6… damn, what kind choice is that!

the mystery 2nd support act was jesse doing an acoustic set… which was very cool, and led really well into the full show, they opened with “welcome to bangkok“; 5 guitarists and 2 drummers at full tilt… super loud and absolutely amazing… the 2nd drummer and other 2 guitars made several more appearances during the night always adding weight to the sound… i wonder what their show was like at the bdo the other day? surely they couldn’t have been this intense (and loud) at 5 in the afternoon…

yet again, i’m amazed at the level of dedication in the audience, the majority of people in the place were yelling the lyrics for the full show… see below for obligatory phone/camera picture.
