so now facebook has live chat… that was sneaky.

for me, facebook is becoming more and more like this video

i never did get around to emailing everyone, and the longer i leave it, the further away doing that gets… i’m at 172 “friends” now, so now i could just start chatting with these people, but… i find i really don’t have the inclination… maybe i’ll do a drastic prune instead.

sure, facebook keeps recommending people i might know, the majority of these people i “know of”, but really don’t know them well enough in the real world to consider myself their “facebook friend”… the thing is, i’m sure lots of people add these sorts of relationships as “friends”, but why? to appear popular? to broadcast their status to more people? i don’t know. also, did anyone else notice that facebook completely ripped off twitter with the tag line: what are you doing right now?

oh well, in the grand scheme of things, having an unmanagable number of friends isn’t a big deal is it? maybe only for the internet celebrities?

to think, i’ve had more communication with one of my favorite internet show hosts than probably 70% of my facebook friends!

Wordpress dashboard says:

“You have 273 posts, contained within 12 categories…

…with 510 comments,

…and 40,075 hits (5430 unique).”

in two years exactly!

for those counting at home, that’s a post every 3.7 days! (take note liz)

can you believe this thing has been going for two years now? crazy huh… that means we will have been in melbourne for two years very soon (may 1st, i think)… so much has gone on, so many memories, i really want to do some sort of montage post? i’d like to be able to show (what i think are) “highlights” somehow…

meh, too much work…

…check out the archives if you’re keen.

wow liz, i didn’t realise i had a quota to fill!

umm, the last couple of days have been pretty crazy… last thursday afternoon i went to my first MTUB meetup which was pretty cool, even though i had to leave early to head off to go to a work dinner at a greek place in collingwood… my first greek restaurant experience would you believe? but hang on, i’m getting side-tracked…

ok, MTUB, um, i managed to meet and have a quick chat with Lucas, LisaMaree, Warwraith, mspecht, duncanriley, and even said a quick hello to the veritable twitter superstar that is andrewsayer… i was disappointed to leave early, it seemed the people to alcohol consumed ratio was just getting good… oh well next time i guess…

anyways onto the work do, the food was excellent, all served tapas style… but they probably have their own word for it hey… those vine leaf rice thingys were the best i’ve ever tasted, plus some sort of fried cheese and all the rest, excellent! …at some stage, waiters started putting bottles of ouzo on all the tables (our group was probably 120 people)… i’d never had it before; much like sambuca i guess… with all the food, beer and ouzo going around, our party (and my table in particular) got pretty loud… so by the end of the night, one of the guys at my table had thrown up on himself… and after being dropped back to his building by a cab, was found sleeping in the foyer of said building by a another tenant (and co-worker luckily enough)!

so yeah, big night. crazy.

friday night, me and some friends went to see henry rollins, such a great speaker, really funny, poignant, and maybe endearingly a little insecure… he spoke for three and a half hours and in that time, took two sips of water. I didn’t get bored at all, just uncomfortable in the chair, and my brain needed a break to absorb and try to go again…

saturday kim went to a friends wedding in the afternoon and i looked after liam, great to spend some time at home with him after the previous couple of days, he’s become quite aware of smaller sounds, and he’s learning that he can actually shake and bang things to make noise… this is particularly great come bath time and water is going everywhere!

sunday i went to a mates bbq and played some poker, lost on some silly bets… who chases a 3? damn. 20-20 hindsight as they say…

did you know all pure white cats are deaf? i didn’t until sunday arv. sometimes i’d love it if bebe was deaf, damn… although she is becoming more affectionate (because of the cold, i think)…

ok so, i’m gonna go without proofing this post too thoroughly… enjoy
(correcting me).

boring tech post, please ignore.

i was going to do a big “for and against” post for the iPod touch and n95, but in reality i just can’t be bothered to wade into that massive arguement, it’s not that i have anything against the iphone really, just that i don’t understand the hype around what appears to be quite a limited device…

i guess i’m in a relatively unique position having owned the nokia “flagship” device since december ‘07; the n95-8gb… and now that i managed to win an iPod touch last month i feel like i can write a more balanced post about them…

  • the touchscreen keyboard is pretty horrible to use and i can’t see it getting better because how is it ever going to know what you “meant to press”? tactile response is still more efficient.
  • the ipod touch is pretty big for something that’s going to spend the majority of it’s time in your pocket, i guess you could be watching movies on it… yes, i have been known to watch the odd daily show or robot chicken episode on my n95, but it’s not like either of those are filmed in high def or anything…
  • my n95 allows me to subscribe to and schedule the download of podcasts on the fly, over the air… the iPod wants to go to iTunes to do this, which to me, kinda defeats the purpose.

…but i guess that shows my limited ipod experience in general doesn’t; i don’t want to use iTunes, for anything, but it wants me to use it for everything… and well, nokia seem to encourage application development, but without the seemingly apple patented impenetrable field reality distorting marketing…

marketing the n95? case in point, have you seen this or this? add the fact that when you plug any standard usb cable in the phone, it pops up on any computer as a storage device so you can transfer music/images/videos, installing and using real GPS software on the n95 is a snap, and add a 5 megapixel camera with a decent lens… in the end the popularity and hype seems to boil down to a beauty competition.

people will say; “but it just works”, but somehow they forget, apple is just another evil corporation after their money… and everything is designed to be a closed system to keep them locked in and oblivious.

**sigh**

my next post about the iPod will detail how i can use it without having to jump through the iTunes hoops… look forward to it… :|

i guess you’re wondering how kim’s doing since i ran her over? the answer is pretty well! her foot is fine, bruising turned out to be pretty much the extent of it, apparently it’s still a bit sore occasionally, but she’s otherwise fine…

well sort of… both kim and liam have been pretty sick this weekend… does the title make sense yet? just sinus congestion and headache… problem is, kim can’t take anything for it and liam… is a baby… we have been using vicks vaporub and that whole vaporising malarkey but it hasn’t been fun for anyone… on the plus side though kim found out the hard way that liam has two teeth! they’re the bottom front ones… AND he’s starting to try to crawl; he’ll go from sitting up, then leaning forward he gets onto all fours and rocks back and forth, this doesn’t tend to last too long as he soon becomes too frustrated and loses concentration… i guess i’d better look at baby proofing the lounge room quick smart hey…

so i finally received that iPod Touch and got it going relatively easily with winamp, it even handles offline scrobbling! awesome huh! it’s good to know other people around the web want exactly the same thing i do, AND possess some pretty amazing programming ability… i’ll save you and do a separate post for the iPod rant…

…but it is kinda interesting huh…

i can believable!

yeah, i know, that’s old… (but still funny)…

just wanted to post quickly about the NUFC form change… check it:

Sat. 08 Mar - Liverpool 3 - 0 Newcastle
Mon. 17 Mar - Birmingham 1 - 1 Newcastle
Sat. 22 Mar - Newcastle 2 - 0 Fulham
Sun. 30 Mar - Tottenham 1 - 4 Newcastle
Sat. 05 Apr - Newcastle 3 - 0 Reading

I know, not exactly top tier opposition, but hey, we’ve lost to much less… so yeah, 5 games; 10 goals for, only 5 against, not bad. apparently they’re playing in a 4-3-3 formation with… wait for it… martins starting!

i did actually download all our fixtures and results so i could graph the rollercoaster of a season it has been but haven’t gotten around to mapping it all out… who knows, maybe a top half of the table finish isn’t out of the question this season!

**sigh**

mp3 tagging dilemma

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

if you have a collection of music that is in a digital format like mp3 and have a very mild case of OCD like me… you might know exactly what i’m about to talk about…

take a movie soundtrack for instance, a collection of songs by different artists, musicbrainz or last.fm wants all the tracks labelled with each individual artist which is all well and good (and correct in that, yes, the different songs have different artists) BUT once you start browsing through your music you find that you have millions of artists in your library but each only has one track… maybe a ministry of sound album is a better example, but you get the idea…

so i go back and force all the artist tags in soundtracks to be “various artists”, and albums like ministry of sound/godskitchen/onelove get tagged as such… but it’s a hassle…

i can appreciate last.fm need to keep a united front and yes, i know it’s a free “service”, but they really need to give the album some attention… especially with the iTunes store being so popular, a lot of people have said the album is dead, well thanks for your input, but as long music is being released on CD, i’ll buy it, not because i have money to burn, but because i’d prefer as little loss in quality as possible and i guess because it’s less of an impulse purchase than “one song for 99c” (that i would probably regret buying and delete anyway).

am i a freak or what?

oh hey, i came across a pretty cool site for making “mix tapes” either to give to people or just to make for the sake of web ego called muxtape… because i’m a sucker here’s mine, especially for you…

where were you 5 years ago?

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

i was in fiji, and loving it.

…but a couple of days ago i would’ve have been getting married at newstead house.

we celebrated by staying at the stamford plaza on little collins st on saturday night… kim got us a package deal that included;

  • robes with our names stitched on,
  • a half hour massage each,
  • free champagne, wine and chocolates,
  • a spa in our room,
  • a personal chef for a complementary three course dinner,
  • a couple of pay-per-view movies and popcorn…

one of the best things? liam slept in and we ordered room service breakfast!

nice.
