mp3 tagging dilemma
6 April, 2008 – 10:26 pmif you have a collection of music that is in a digital format like mp3 and have a very mild case of OCD like me… you might know exactly what i’m about to talk about…
take a movie soundtrack for instance, a collection of songs by different artists, musicbrainz or last.fm wants all the tracks labelled with each individual artist which is all well and good (and correct in that, yes, the different songs have different artists) BUT once you start browsing through your music you find that you have millions of artists in your library but each only has one track… maybe a ministry of sound album is a better example, but you get the idea…
so i go back and force all the artist tags in soundtracks to be “various artists”, and albums like ministry of sound/godskitchen/onelove get tagged as such… but it’s a hassle…
i can appreciate last.fm need to keep a united front and yes, i know it’s a free “service”, but they really need to give the album some attention… especially with the iTunes store being so popular, a lot of people have said the album is dead, well thanks for your input, but as long music is being released on CD, i’ll buy it, not because i have money to burn, but because i’d prefer as little loss in quality as possible and i guess because it’s less of an impulse purchase than “one song for 99c” (that i would probably regret buying and delete anyway).
am i a freak or what?
oh hey, i came across a pretty cool site for making “mix tapes” either to give to people or just to make for the sake of web ego called muxtape… because i’m a sucker here’s mine, especially for you…

I hear you brotha!
What I have experienced is very similar in that I had multiple compilation albums consisting of around 16 tracks per CD for each double CD set. A total of around 30 odd albums = a lot of individual artists. The biggest issue is when you hit an album that iTunes doesn’t have in its CDDB which has happened a fair bit for those compilation albums produced in NZ, time for manual entry….
What bugs me the most about having to identify each individual artist, specifically for compilations, is that your Artist listing explodes in size.
