i was listening to BOL-816 the other day, it contains some interesting discussion about online profiles, facebook and i guess narcissism… i was reminded of the ever-so-snarky merlin mann’s twitter feed (when he was using it) and of this gem;
If you’re really worried about your “branding,” try to stop thinking about life as a press release and just focus on _making something_ (twitter)
…just last week i decided i was tired of the majority of people from the tech news industry that i follow, and for the most part, unfollowed them, and honestly, cannot understand why people would ever follow problogger let alone the all the other wannabes. i got to thinking, what value are they actually adding? twitter is for (officially) “what are you doing right now?”, and the last thing i want to hear or read about is barely famous people doing ad-hoc press releases for their barely famous acquaintances… for me to follow someone now, they almost have to live in melbourne, not annoy me, and limit the swearing…
poignant quote from the arstechnica article:
“…researchers caution that those who are overly fond of themselves tend to cultivate a wide-but-shallow social network…”
so yeah, i think in the grand scheme of narcissism, i’m ok… i recently pared my facebook “friends” down to a reasonable number, revisited my “info” page and made sure there isn’t too much there… and i’m considering removing the “about” tab from the top of this site, hmm, would that make a difference?
so the melbourne zoo on sunday was amazing, around every corner were animals that left me dumb struck… i find it’s a place place of mixed emotions really, i ran out of superlatives for everything i saw, the gorillas, elephants, meer cats, mountain lions, bears… etc…
but i felt sad they were in cages, not out free… but then, if that type of animal is doing ok, not endangered, protected and the rest… having them in zoos as well is probably doing good, giving people and appreciation of their majesty and even some education about the impact people have on natural habitats…
or maybe that’s just me rationalising.
-anyway- liam was great, pointing is his new thing… he’s learning more and more every day… i feel like i should list the tricks he can do now, but there’s already too many! for one thing, he has definitely tried to say ‘elmo’ crazy huh…
what a week! our little boy is more than one year old now, and yeah, he is amazing…
the “butterflys and bumblebees” party kim and emma organised was excellent, too bad the weather was typically melbourne…
ah well, we’ve gotta show these queenslanders what the word cold actually means.
my work is still super crazy, i’ll be working most nights and weekends till mid-october it looks like, but hopefully some decent sized changes wil be coming by the end of this project… and i guess me not sleeping very well is related to that… apparently last night i leaned over kim trying to reach the floor and yelled “why did you pour the black sauce on his face?” …so yeah, sleeptalking much?
it’s not really new for me, apparently, i do crazy talk/walk stuff in my sleep all the time!
anyways, i’ve added a bunch of photos, talk to you later…
normally it’s kim and i that notice we’re wearing exactly the same colours as we’re leaving the house, today, it was me and liam… great huh… in fairness, kim was the one who put him in that jumper… ahh little peanuts… what a champ!
the weekend gone was pretty good, i didn’t have to work for a start, woohoo!
umm, we watched the golden compass on friday night, i really enjoyed it but am surprised at what passes for a kids movie these days; it was pretty scary and dark in parts…
on saturday liam was back at swimming lessons, it’s weird, he just won’t lie still, he always wants to be on his tummy thrashing around and dunking his face in… one of the other onlooking mums told kim he is going to be a great swimmer, hopefully not seriously, i don’t want to be dropping him off at a pool at 4am for the rest of my life…
saturday night kim made some sort of asian bbq chicken dish for dinner… i LOVE the sweet soy sauce we got from the chinese grocer the other week.. and sunday we caught up with some friends in yarraville for brunch… liam behaved really well, we just stretched his out lunch for an hour and he didn’t get too restless… he even did a few of his tricks for the applauding masses!
ok well, this week should be interesting, i’ll be doing classroom training this week instead of going into work… and hopefully there’ll be an exam at the end of it… we’ll have to wait and see… talk to you later.
you know you haven’t posted for a while, when you start considering writing about how hard it is to write… or you start revisiting the well worn road of discussing what’s really relevant…
but i know what’s relevant, things like; family, melbourne, football, music, tech, twitter, food… so i don’t need to go there do i… i just need to write more… easy.
now that that is out of the way, you know what’s been annoying me lately? a couple of people have been trying to finish my sentences for me, in an effort to prove they understand what i’m talking about… even when either of them ask me the question… it just proves they don’t, and most of the time it doubles the length of the conversation… **sigh**
ok, in other news, liam took his first real steps yesterday, i was absolutely gobsmacked… he’s becoming a real person! i’ve uploaded some news pics to prove it, hehehe…
hey! why don’t i make this an uber-post and try to cover ALL the categories above… hmm…
ok well, that seemed to work pretty well, amazing how much crap i can come out with.
or maybe not.
having the tv pack it in really halted my wii fit progress, it still isn’t fixed… so i setup our projector again and now everything we watch is MASSIVE.
we went up to visit some family this weekend at kyabram, which was really great, until we got home on sunday night when i started to feel a bit sick… so went to bed at 1830, and then spent the rest of the night getting up to throw up… till about 0130… nasty.
apart from that, not much is happening… liam is growing like a machine, my work is super busy… umm, i finally went to the dentist for the first time in 2 and a half years, and guess what?! no work needed, just another check up in 6 months! that never happens. awesome.
ok, i’ve gotta try to give this thing more attention… he says signing off.
the weekend just gone was pretty cool, i was oncall, so we didn’t really do much, just grocery shopping, spent most of the time at home, liam is clapping a lot now, it’s his new thing… along with the yelling, crawling, squealing, and yelling some more… we took him to an indoor play centre down the road, and he loved it, he’s so social, other kids seem to really interest him…
we just got our tv back from the repair place, and it’s having the same problem again! damn.
no tv is good and bad, we don’t watch much anyway, it’s just nice to have the choice… and my hard-drive media player thingy failed… i managed to get a backup of the majority and the disk is under warranty, but c’mon… that’s annoying.
well, i think it started late saturday night with what i thought was heart-burn… then i felt kinda weird all sunday; shivvered and sweated through the flight back to melbourne and once i’d seen a doctor on monday morning, was told i had “a virus”… nothing to do to fight it, but just let the body do it’s thing… and take panadol for the symptoms…
so after arriving home from our most excellent holiday in queensland, i spent two full days in bed at home whining like a little girl. in reality, i haven’t felt that sick in a very long time, maybe i should’ve had that flu shot… hmm… i love that scene in jarhead where they’re told to take the drugs…
in actual news, i have to change or transfer the hosting for this site very soon… a massive thankyou goes to dave for allowing me a free ride for so long… much appreciated.
i’ll put up some new photos once the internerd stuff has been sorted out and now that i’m actually feeling better i can finally finish talking about the euro2008 football… soon…
so we’re off for some holidays on friday and as i’ve said before, we can’t wait! …heading up to qld for a bit to catch up with family and what-not… so… the blog might be a bit quiet because of limited inter-tubes access and disconnecting for a while, which probably isn’t a bad thing.
i might mms the occasional pic to the tumblr because i can.
in other news, work has been really good, quite challenging (and good). liam has been a little bit sick the last couple of days, and seeing as now he can stand himself up, he has been quite difficult to settle to sleep, kim even resorted to sleeping on a blow-up mattress with him, in a separate room, to make things a bit easier last night…
the euro2008 football highlights show on sbs has been great to watch, and hopefully while we’re up in townsville there will be cable TV, even better!
ok, gotta go find some summer clothes… laterz
i’ve been thinking, after those two tweets earlier this month:
so there’s some pretty messed up ‘art’ in the degraves underpass this morning…
that “art” has been covered up! yay, no more full frontal nudity on the way to work!
so what is art?
umm, pretty big question, i guess this month i’ve been trying to define it for myself…
is it just stuff i appreciate?
maybe stuff i couldn’t actually create myself?
i mean, you read about people “pushing the boundaries” and challenging us with their art…
…but as a viewer, can being subjected to sometimes horrific scenes be considered art?
hmm, i should explain… i walk through the campbell arcade every day on the way to work and the exhibit in one of the display cases was probably 60 photographs lined up in a grid. each of the photos showed the top half of a shirtless guy wearing a executioner style hood, but in each of the photos the hood was made of different material. materials like zebra print velour or hot pink something… and it went on and on…
btw, seeing as everything i know about S&M i learnt from CSI, i couldn’t help but feel like the other exhibits in the arcade contributed to a very S&M slant (the artist was probably trying challenge me or push boundaries **groan** ) and then in the bottom right corner of the case was a bigger photograph of the model, but full body, so full frontal nude guy, wearing a hood/mask thing.
consider the boundary pushed.
in a gallery, maybe that exhibition would be ok, but in a walkway to a train station? not so much.
you only have to watch a couple of episodes of epic-fu to see new art is alive and well (and it doesn’t even lower itself to trying to shock you)…
so yeah, my opinion?
unnecessary photos of nudes smacks of no-talent clowns looking for attention.
make sense? i guess it doesn’t matter.
